General Session: Parking Solutions Competition

Moderator: Kim Jackson, CAPP, IPI Board Past Chair
Director, Transportation and Parking Services, Princeton University
Sponsored by: Carl Walker, a division of WGI

IPI launched the Parking Solutions Competition in 2017 and sparked some big ideas from university students--the up-and-coming thought leaders and visionaries in the parking, transportation, and mobility industry. They were challenged to find an innovative way to reduce the use of single-occupancy vehicles and maximize land use, increase mobility options, and decrease congestion, emissions, and pollution. It was interesting and exciting to hear their big ideas—and it’s time for the next competition!

This year the challenge is to design The Garage of the Future with a 10 to 20-year outlook. Student contestants will consider and incorporate:
•    Form: Planning, design, aesthetics, sustainability, adaptability, materials.
•    Functionality: Mobility, flow, configuration, security, connectivity.
•    Cost: How do you value a parking space?
•    Relationships: Smart city, connected cars, people, transit, IoT.

Four teams will make it to the final round and be hosted at the 2018 IPI Conference & Expo general session. Live onstage, they’ll demonstrate to a panel of judges and the audience why their design is the best vision for the garage of the future. The best design will be awarded with a $500 cash prize, an article in The Parking Professional, and the reward of membership into the most vibrant parking and mobility community in the world--the International Parking Institute.
